Betting Glossary
We know there's plenty of terms used in the sports betting world that you might not have heard of before, so here's our jargon busting A-Z of all things sports to help you out!
A
Acca - a bet consisting of multiple selections in which all need to win in order for the 'acca' to win.
All Weather - a type of pitch, field or racing track which is an artificial surface.
Ante-Post - placing a bet Ante-Post means backing a bet on an event further in the future. Backing bets for a football event that takes place next year would be considered Ante-Post.
At The Post - the point at which the horses in a horse race reach the starting line/point
B
Back - to place a bet on something means to 'back' it.
Banker - often used to describe a bet which is perceived to be very safe.
Bankroll - another term for the balance in your account.
Betting Without - a bet placed on an event with a certain named selection removed from the betting.
Bookie - a company or website that facilitates the placement of bets, such as Jackpotjoy!

Canadian - a multiple bet which is also known as a Super Yankee and consists of 5 selections with 26 bets which are 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 four-folds and a five-fold accumulator.
Cashout - the process of taking the profit or loss on your bet before the events have finished. This can be done via the My Bets section.
Closing Line - the last price of a selection before an event begins.
Coupon - a term used to describe a list of bets shown together. If all of the Premier League fixtures were shown on one screen, this would be a Premier League coupon.

Dead Heat - a situation whereby more than one participant is the winner of an event. If two horses tie the race, as the tie was not offered as a market, this would be settled as a Dead Heat.
Draw No Bet (DNB) - a market in which in the event of a draw, your stake is returned.
E
Evens - used to describe a bet that has a 50% chance of winning (a coin toss for example) which is priced at 2.00 or 1/1.
F
Favourite - the selection in an event which is more likely to win based on the odds. If two tennis players are priced 1.50 for Player A and 2.20 for Player B, then Player A would be considered the favourite.
FGS - an abbreviation for First Goalscorer.
Fold - another term for an accumulator. If an accumulator consists of 5 selections, it would be described as a 5-fold.
Form - the recent results of a team or player are described as form. If a football team for example has won their last 8 games in a row they would be described as 'in good form'.
Full Time - he point at which an event ends.

H2H / Head to Head - the record that two opposing teams or players have had against each other in the past.
Heinz - a multiple bet which consists of 6 selections with 57 bets which are 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 four-folds, 6 five-folds and a six-fold accumulator.
Handicap - an advantage or a disadvantage given to a team or player to make the bet itself a better price, but the bet more difficult / easier to win.

Inplay - describes an event which can be bet on whilst it is being played.

Lay - to lay something means to back against it. If you were 'lay' Manchester United in a game of football then that would be the same as backing the other team to win or draw
Limit - a limit is normally used in sports betting to describe the maximum amount that can be bet on a single event. If the maximum bet is £100 then that would be a £100 limit.
Live - another term for Inplay, where bets can be bet on during the time in which they are happening.
Longshot - a term often used to describe a bet with high odds.
M
Margin - the points by which a team or player wins an event. If Chelsea were to beat Bournemouth 2-0 then they have won the game by a 2 goal margin.
N
Non-Runner - a selection that didn't take part in the race or event.
O
Odds - this is the price of each selection, which is indicative of the probability of a bet landing. Odds are also used to calculate your returns.
Outright - this involves placing a beton a player or team to win a whole tournament or competition.
P
Patent - a multiple bet which consists of 3 selections with 7 bets which are 3 singles, 3 doubles and 1 treble.
Place - when a selection places it finishes within the positions that are stated on the event. A golf tournament for example may show place terms of 1-2-3-4-5-6 which means while the 1st place would be a winner, any golfer who finishes between 2nd and 6th would 'place'.
Price - another term for the odds of a bet.
Punter - a slang term for a sports bettor.
Push - a bet which is a push is a refund, it's another term for void.

Returns - the amount you receive back from a winning bet is known as the 'returns'.

Single - a single is a bet placed on a single market which consists of just one selection.
Spread - often used in American sports, this is another term for handicap.
Stake - the amount which you place on a bet.
Starting Price - the price at which a selection starts an event.
Super Heinz - a multiple bet which consists of 7 selections with 120 bets which are 21 doubles, 35 trebles, 35 four-folds, 21 five-folds, 7 six-folds and a seven-fold accumulator.

Trixie - a multiple bet which consists of 3 selections with 4 bets which are 3 doubles and 1 treble.
U
V
Void - a bet which for one reason or another, returns your stake. This could be due to backing a bet which for one reason or another didn't play out, or a market which contains the option of being a void bet.
W
Wager - another term for a bet.
X
X - means to draw or tie.
Y
Yankee - a multiple bet which consists of 4 selections with 11 bets which are 6 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 four-fold accumulator.
Z
